Great North Run 2026
As its name suggests, the Great North Run is the ‘greatest’ or largest running event in the North of England. It is also the largest half marathon event not just in the United Kingdom but the entire world.
Every year, over 50,000 runners take part many of whom are raising funds for charity. As one of the UK’s leading running charities, Run 4 Cancer will have a number of supporters taking part.

The Route
Although the course varies slightly every year, the Great North Run usually starts in Newcastle upon Tyne on the A167 road (the central motorway) on the edge of the city centre. All roads on the course are closed several hours before the race begins.
Runners head down this iconic road then skirt around the eastern side of the city centre before crossing the Tyne Bridge into Gateshead. Athletes then run towards Gateshead town centre before turning East towards Sunderland.
The route then heads north-east towards South Shields and reaches the southern side of Jarrow. The route passes through the south of South Shields (through Harton and Marsden) until it reaches the seafront. The last mile of the route takes runners along the seafront road to the finishing line at South Shields.

Run 4 Cancer - About Us
Set up by a team of running enthusiasts, all of whom have lost a family member or a friend to cancer, Run 4 Cancer is primarily a provider of days out and short-breaks for British families affected by cancer. We give families something to look forward to during the most difficult of times. We also make grants to UK based care institutions and support research into the positive effects of exercise (e.g. running) and how it can help with cancer prevention and recovery.
