Windermere Marathon 2027
The original Windermere Marathon first took place in 1982 when a group of local runners and volunteers organised the first marathon around England’s largest lake. Being situated in the heart of the Lake District, this marathon is considered by many to be the “most scenic marathon in the UK.”
With an elevation profile of +600 metres, the Windermere Marathon isn’t about obtaining the fastest time… it’s all about the experience. With breathtaking views from start to finish, this is a true runner’s marathon. Approximately 1,500 runners take part every year.

The Route
The course takes runners on a full loop around Lake Windermere, offering constant views of England’s largest natural lake and the surrounding Lake District fells. Starting and finishing at Brathay Hall near Ambleside, the route winds through quiet country lanes and charming villages such as Hawkshead, Newby Bridge, and Bowness, mixing rolling hills with sheltered woodland stretches and open lakeside road. Though hilly in places, it’s loved for its peaceful atmosphere, supportive locals, and some of the most beautiful marathon scenery in the UK.

We set very low minimum sponsorship funds and fully understand that the cost of living crisis is impacting people’s ability to sponsor people. Run 4 Cancer - About Us
Set up by a team of running enthusiasts, all of whom have lost a family member or a friend to cancer, Run 4 Cancer is primarily a provider of days out and short-breaks for British families affected by cancer. We give families something to look forward to during the most difficult of times. We also make grants to UK based care institutions and support research into the positive effects of exercise (e.g. running) and how it can help with cancer prevention and recovery.
